Chennai based two-wheeler manufacturer, the TVS Motor Company once again displayed their hybrid concept scooter, the Qube, as also seen at the previous Auto Expo. Slated for a commercial launch sometime in 2013, TVS claims the stylish, automatic hybrid scooter remains in its developmental stages. The company is also displaying another upcoming commuter bike at the Auto Expo, the 125cc Radeon, which when launched shall expand the company’s 125cc portfolio, currently only represented by the Flame. The Radeon can however only be expected to launch by the third quarter of 2013. TVS also displayed its indigenously developed Automatic Transmission technology concept, which it claims is equally convenient and adaptable on a scooter as a bike, capable of boosting mileage and efficiency by 20 percent. India's  Tata Technologies  unveiled the prototype for a $20,000 electric car that can carry up to four passengers in  Detroit  Wednesday as it set out to challenge more costly rivals.  "The eMO project symbolizes the coming of age of Indian automotive engineering," said  Warren Harris , president of Tata Technologies.  "It is a tangible example of the capability of Tata Technologies to engineer a full vehicle -- a first for any India-based engineering services company."  Tata Technologies does extensive consulting work for clients such as  Ford  and  Chrysler , offing the "competitive advantage" of its experience in both developing and mature automotive markets, Harris said.  The prototype is Tata's "business card," said  Kevin Fisher , who heads the group's vehicle development team.  The objective was to demonstrate it was possible to build an electric vehicle with an attractive price, thought not with the intentio...

Maruti Suzuki has revealed its plans for the upcoming 2012 Auto Expo. The big news for the small-car giant will be its aggressive entry into the UV segment with two models – both of which will be showcased at the Expo in New Delhi. First up will be the global unveiling of Maruti’s first compact MPV, the Ertiga. As originally seen in our spy images, the Ertiga looks similar to the Swift from the front, with peeled-back headlights that stretch to the pronounced wheel arches. The rear treatment looks well proportioned, if rather generic in comparison. The Ertiga will seat seven and will come with petrol and diesel engine options. Mahindra is will once again take orders for its hugely popular XUV500 SUV in January. As you may recall, the company shut down bookings on October 11, after having received over 8,000 orders – or four-months’ production – over the span of just 10 days. The company says production is on schedule and will also be ramped up to meet demand, which has grown thanks in part to word of mouth from customers who have taken delivery. The launch prices, which started at Rs 10.8 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), however are expected to go up.

Honda has showcased an all-new small diesel engine at the Tokyo Motor Show. The 1596cc i-Dtec unit is the first of a new generation of engines the company is calling ‘Earth Dreams Technology’. It claims the tech will deliver a good mix of performance and environmental values. The engine produces 118bhp at 4000rpm and a considerable 30.5kgm from 2000rpm, so it should have the performance end of the spectrum covered. Honda also claims it is lighter than any other 1.6-litre diesel engine in the market, and that CO 2  emissions are less than 100g/km.  While its first application will be in the European Civic, it’s not yet clear which other models will use this 1.6-litre motor, but Honda says the new technology will make its way across the entire model range over the next three years. India's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has increased the prices of its diesel cars by up to Rs 10,000. While the diesel variants of Swift, Dzire and SX4 cars became costlier by Rs 10,000 from Monday, the price of the Ritz hatchback has been raised by 2,000.  "There has been a critical upswing in the inputs cost and an adverse appreciation in the Japanese currency yen that had made imports costlier and forced this hike," a company spokesperson said.  The carmaker is in the process of normalising production after a 55% decline in October to 50,487 units, following recurrent strikes since June that kept the Manesar plant shut for 59 days. As a result, the waiting time for some of Maruti's diesel model stretches up to nine months.  Industry sources say other carmakers, including Hyundai  and Toyota , are also looking at price revisions. 

Skoda has launched the Rapid saloon in India at a starting price of Rs 6.75 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The Rapid is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, and offered with manual and automatic variants. Built on the same platform as the Vento (code: VW251), the Skoda iteration (code SK: 251) shares most mechanical bits with the VW saloon which includes engines as well. Hence, the Rapid is powered by the same 1.6 petrol and diesel motors both of which develop 105bhp, but in a slightly different state of tune. In the looks department, the headlights, the grille and the fogs are similar to Skoda’s Fabia. To help the Skoda and VW bits blend, the Rapid gets a new bonnet, new fenders and a mildly altered chin. The bonnet is longer, the new fender has the Vento’s sharp crease built into it and the chin is slightly altered at the corners, where it merges with the Vento’s beautifully executed wheel arches. Targeting the fast growing billionaire club in Asia's second-fastest growing market, Italian luxury sports car maker Automobili Lamborgini  SpA launched the all-new Aventador LP  700-4 model in India, priced at Rs 3.69 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi) on Thursday.  The latest in the range, Aventador was first introduced at the Geneva Motor  show in March this year and has already received orders from 20 Indian customers. The company claims to have received over 1,500 bookings globally.  "This year we expect to sell around 20 Lamborghini in India and aim to double the tally in 2012," said Satya Bagla, managing director of Lamborghini's sole dealer in India, Exclusive Motors. To commemorate the launch of the adventure reality show ‘X-treme Trail’, Nissan unveiled a limited edition X-trail.  It will come with a host of new features such as a touch-screen navigation system, rear spoiler, ‘X-treme Trail’ decal and door visor set, to name a few. The limited edition X-trail is priced at Rs 22.79 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the LE-Grade version and will be on sale from this month at all of Nissan’s 45 dealerships across India. Two months after sigining an agreement with Gujarat government, French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen  on Thursday initiated its India operations at Sanand by conducting a stone laying ceremony for its Rs 4,000 crore facility at the project site situated about 40 kilometers from Ahmedabad.  The company is slated to roll out its first car from the Sanand plant in mid-2014. The 600 acre plot will produce 1.7 lakh cars in the first phase and will raise it to 3.4 lakh in 2016. The upcoming facility will also be used to manufacture gasoline engines and gear boxes.  Last month, American auto company Ford Motors  began work on its second facility at Sanand which will roll-out the first car in 2014.  Infrastructure at the plant will be at par with Europe, company officials told ET. With improvements to the infrastructure already in the pipeline for next year after a wide range of teething problems were experienced over the weekend, Ecclestone sees only a positive future for the event. "I am very, very happy with it and I think everyone else is as well, there is nothing to complain about," he said. "They only need to work on bits and pieces. But this is a prototype, as soon as they get down and have a good look they will find things to improve and I am sure they will improve them." The ongoing floods in Thailand since late July have caused a wave of woe for some carmakers, bringing factories to a standstill and affecting supplies of vital components to assembly facilities in India and other countries. As a result, manufacturers like Toyota, Honda and Ford may face delays in the delivery of their cars. Production of the Toyota Innova, Fortuner and Corolla Altis models which have a high level of Thai-sourced content could be hit. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has stock for the next couple of weeks, but after that supply is uncertain. The Etios and Etios Liva models are more localised in India and hence are less affected. Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co. Ltd (HATC), whose headquarters are in the Rojana Industrial Park Ayutthaya, has suspended production since October 4, due to parts supply disruptions.
