Land Rover Freelander to be assembled in India
Tata Motors will assemble the Land Rover Freelander (SUV) in India. The company's pune plant will assemble the CKD (completely knock down) units imported from Jaguar and Land Rover(UK). The car currently is bought to India as a CBU (completely built unit) and it is priced around 35lakhs. Assembling in India could bring the prices down, even though the Budget has made changes in the definition of (CKD) completely knock down kits, upsetting the plans of foreign car makers. The company plans to produce 2000 units of Freelander every year. This is the cheapest and smallest Land Rover that money could buy.

Tata Motors has sold more than 200 units of Land Rover brand in India, Local assembly would help the company to gain market share and also price it competitively. The Indian Luxury market has been growing well in the past few years, We saw Audi Q5,Q7, BMW X3 and X1 which was launched 2 months back. The market of SUVs has doubled to around 4000-5000 units per year in 2010.
